Gorilla trekking is one of the most lucrative and popular activities one can do when they set foot in Uganda. It is commonly done in the Bwindi impenetrable and Mgahinga National parks. This is an activity that involves tourists getting an up-close experience with endangered mountain gorillas.

On the day you are to track gorillas, there is an advance team of gorilla trackers that goes before the group to monitor and locate the gorillas for the rest of the group joins in the trek.

Mountain gorillas are endangered species with only around 1065 remaining in the whole world. Mountain gorillas are descendants of ancestral monkeys and apes found in Africa and Arabia during the start of the Oligocene epoch (24-34 million years ago).

They share over 98% of their DNA with humans thus displaying extraordinary characteristics. They are headed by a silver back, a mature male who selects places for the group to eat and sleep. These mighty beings look scary but are actually gentle and peaceful with high level intelligence.

 They feed on fruits, leaves, shoots and stems thus enhancing their diet. Male gorillas grow larger and heavier up to a height of 6 feet and weigh 350-500 pounds, having strong and muscular arms, with a life span of 40-50 years.

Gorilla trekking is only done in already habituated gorilla families, meaning those that have adjusted and got used to human presence in that they do not walk away when people approach them. However, it is safe to be7-10 meters aways from them when you are in contact and also not to touch them.

Bwindi impenetrable national park is located in the south-western part of Uganda, 517km from Kampala using the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara-Kabale route, taking 9 hours on road to get there.

This park is divided into sectors namely: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija, Rushaga. However, these sectors have their own gorilla families for example;

Rushaga sector has Nshongo gorilla family, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza, Rwigi, Busingye and Tindatine gorilla families.

Nkuringo has Christmas, Posho, Nkuringo and Bushaho gorilla families

Ruhija is consisted of Oruzogo, Happy, Mukiza, Kyanguliro, and Bitukura gorilla families
